Care Guide

Your East Tennessee Yard, Season by Season

A simple checklist for keeping your beds, shrubs, and trees healthy all year long.

What to Do and When

East Tennessee has hot summers, mild winters, and a lot of rain. Timing is general guidance and can shift with the weather, so use it as a starting point for your property.

Spring

March – May
  • Pull early weeds before they flower and spread seed.
  • Refresh mulch or pine straw to about 2–3 inches deep in beds.
  • Plant flowers and new shrubs once the danger of frost has passed.
  • Trim spring-blooming shrubs right after their flowers fade.

Summer

June – August
  • Keep mulch topped up so beds hold moisture through the heat.
  • Pull weeds every couple of weeks while they are small.
  • Do light trimming on hedges and bushes to keep their shape.
  • Water deeply in the early morning rather than a little each day.

Fall

September – November
  • Clear fallen leaves from beds so they do not smother plants.
  • Remove old, matted mulch or pine straw before adding new.
  • Lay fresh mulch or pine straw to insulate roots for winter.
  • Plant trees and shrubs while the soil is still warm and rain is steady.

Winter

December – February
  • Prune dormant trees and bushes while the branches are bare and easy to see.
  • Check for limbs damaged by storms or ice and have them removed safely.
  • Hold off on heavy pruning of spring bloomers so you do not lose their flowers.
  • Plan your spring projects early so you can book a time that works for you.
